London lure for young Ludlow chefs

AN APPETISER is being served up to entice the best young chefs in Ludlow and south Shropshire to show that they have the recipe for success.

The chance of a week’s work experience at a top London restaurant is the prize in the Ludlow Young Chef competition to be held as part of the Ludlow Food Festival.

It is being organised by Skill Builders – the social enterprise business that gives young people in Ludlow and the surrounding area the chance to learning traditional rural skills.

The competition is open to people training or working as a chef (although not as a head chef ) within 40 miles of Ludlow.

To qualify, the chefs will be aged 16-25 years and they will have to produce either a cold starter or a dessert using local produce that costs no more than £5.

Competitors will be expected to provide a list showing the ingredients they have used, where they are from and the cost.

The dishes will need to be at Ludlow Castle on Friday, September 10 – the first day of the Food Festival – for 3.30pm with judging starting half-anhour later. There will be an area where the dishes can be assembled and put on to plates but there are no cooking facilities.

Each young chef must provide their own utensils, plates and anything else that is needed.

A trophy is being provided by Walls the Butcher of Ludlow and St Leonards Press in the town have donated the printing of the entry forms.

Entries must be in by Monday, September 6. For more information, call Alex Perks on 01584 878202 or e-mail alex@skillbuilders.
