A LUDLOW woman has been convicted of wounding with intent after stabbing a man with a kitchen knife and leaving him virtually blind in one eye.
Sharon Hughes, 38, who had attacked Shane Weir during a street brawl near her home, was said to have taken the law into her own hands and later tried to blame her teenage daughter. Following a four-day re-trial at Shrewsbury Crown Court Hughes was convicted of wounding Mr Weir with intent during the incident in October, 2010.
The original trial in September was halted for legal reasons. Hughes, of Sandpits Avenue, had denied the charge. Her 18- year-old daughter Stacey Mills, of Fernley Avenue, who had also denied the charge, was cleared by the jury.
Judge Robin Onions adjourned sentence for reports and Hughes was allowed conditional bail, subject to an electronically monitored curfew. He said he was also concerned that emotions were running high in Ludlow over the incident and warned that anyone taking the law into their own hands would face imprisonment.
In addition Judge Onions called for a report into the police inquiry, saying that it was inefficient. During the trial the jury heard that Mr Weir suffered blurred vision in his left eye after being stabbed and did not know whether he will get his full sight back. The attack happened after Mr Weir’s girlfriend, Nadia Tehran, received an abusive phone callfrom Stacey Mills and later returned home to discover it had been “trashed” and went to Sandpits Avenue to confront Hughes and her daughter, believing they were responsible. Mr Weir had stood between Hughes and his girlfriend and Hughes went towards him with the knife and as he turned he saw her thrust the knife towards his face and he felt his eyeball pop.
The court heard Hughes claimed Mills had left home with a knife and that she had taken it from her and stuffed it in her clothing. she claimed she had attempted to get between Mills and Mr Weir’s girlfriend, but claimed the victim hit her and pushed her against a car and she was not aware that he had been injured.
